The focus of the Story Scribblers Writer’s Retreat is on WRITING… and we’ll also offer some time for learning with a variety of workshops, informal critique sessions, and time for beta reading with friends.  We’ll host a Mini Book Festival where authors can share their work, learn about the books others have written, and perhaps sell or buy a few.  We’ll end our time together with our Writing Contest Awards Breakfast, and a “Writer’s Improv Theatre Experience."  It will be a fun weekend full of words and laughter… and you’ll go home with a tribe of new friends you never realized you’d find… plus a copy of a published anthology filled with everyone's work, to support charity.

Our Writer’s Retreat is limited to just 60 Indie Writers.  You may be already published, or still working on fine tuning your work and getting it out into the world, either is just fine with us.  However, we expect that you are serious about your writing craft, and dedicated to the Indie Author Process.  This is going to be a weekend focused on writing, sharing, learning, and support.  Imagine an experience more like High School Band Camp and less like a Girls/Guys weekend away.  Small Press authors are also invited to attend.

If you can't take two days away from your "day job" to come write with us, we understand.  We will accommodate late arrivals on Friday, August 25, 2023, however because this is an "all-inclusive" event, we cannot reduce the fees for those arriving on Friday morning.  If it is impossible for you to attend from Breakfast time on Friday, please do not reserve a space... allow another writer to attend.

Each morning you'll have the option to Greet The Day with Mandy Jo's Yoga class or sleep a little longer.  Each night, we'll share time with a Campfire Storytelling Circle, during which we'll probably indulge in far too many S'mores and just the right amount of laughter... and perhaps a little suspense.  On Sunday morning, you’ll have the option to attend Sacred Christian services in the Chapel.

The Colombiere Conference Center is a secluded place filled with acres of towering pines, oaks, open fields, and walking trails.  Gardens and pathways throughout the grounds invite you to take a break, breathe, walk in conversation with other writers, or simply steal away a little alone time with your Muse.  Comfortable dormitory-style accommodations allow for friends to share the energy of the creative process.  There are cozy common areas where you can gather in small groups or find a corner to immerse yourself in writing.  The dining facilities offer a wide variety of buffet-style meals to serve many different dietary restrictions and preferences, including vegetarian, vegan, lactose intolerant, and nut or shellfish allergies.  We'll be sure to pair you with a roommate who will offer laughter and inspiration to your weekend, and we'll keep your tummy happy with delicious meals and fun snacks.

The Story Scribblers Writer’s Retreat is first come, first served, and submitting a piece for our community service project, "Summer Vacation" is required.
If you’d like to join the fun, here are the guidelines…

Step One: The Deposit… A $175 NON-REFUNDABLE Deposit... A Non-Refundable Deposit of $175 is due at the time of your reservation to hold your space.  We only have 60 reservations available, and all reservations are on a first come, first served basis.  If our list is filled early, we will post a "Wait List" opportunity on our website and social media pages. When we receive your deposit, your reservation will be verified, and you will be sent another invoice for the balance, which you can either pay in installments or in one lump sum no later than May 20, 2023 (Early Bird) or July 15, 2023 (Regular Rate).  If the full Early Bird balance has not been received by May 20, 2023; your rate will automatically adjust to the Regular Rate, and the full balance of that rate will apply.  A 50% refund will be returned (less the non-refundable deposit) on pre-payments for cancellations before May 20, 2023.  Refunds are NOT made after May 20, 2023.

Step Two: The Writer's Details.  In this form, you’ll give us all the important details.  Writers must be 18 years old or older to attend the 2023 Story Scribblers Writer’s Retreat, and because this is a limited attendance, focused event, spouses or significant others will not be accepted to attend unless they are also writers working on a WIP, or planning to develop a new project.  Therefore, all applicants must complete separate Details forms, even if they share a life.  Unfortunately, we do not have accommodations for animals at the Center.  Sorry, but your super-floofs, feathered friends, and amphibian/reptile associates will have to stay home.  Certified Services Animals, of course, are the exception.

Step Three: Submit A Story or Poem… This is important.  Everyone must submit something as part of their reservation.  It is important to us that everyone who attends the Writing Retreat has a sincere dedication to the writing craft.  We want to spend four days diving deep into the written word, and we want to do that with people who are passionate about writing.   After all, that's the reason we're hosting the Story Scribblers Writer's Retreat.  Your submission will reassure us that you're one of our "Tribe."

We are focused on serving community through the written word, and so the story(ies) or poem(s) you submit will be edited and published in an anthology to support The Haley Sue Foundation... AND automatically entered into our Writing Contest!  Yes, there will be prizes!

Here are the Story/Poem Submission Guidelines:

  • All submissions will be published in an anthology, a copy of which you will take home with you (with some other surprises) at the end of the Retreat.

  • By submitting a story and/or poem to the Writer’s Retreat, you give Pages Promotions, LLC permission to publish your work and sell it, in this iteration, in perpetuity.
  • You retain copyright of your work, and all rights to reprint/republish your submissions, in perpetuity.
