Why does it cost the same to do a 10,000-word manuscript as a 75,000-word manuscript?

Because the same range of time is blocked out for both projects. Each round of editing is scheduled to take approximately four weeks to complete (sometimes longer for manuscripts larger than 75,000 words). Some manuscripts require more time and effort than others, but we cannot possibly know that until we begin editing them. So, we prefer to allocate enough time to give every manuscript the comprehensive care it uniquely requires.

What if my manuscript’s word count is between 3,000 and 20,000 words?

We understand that shorter non-fiction works, short stories, and novellas frequently fall below 20,000 words.  Still, it's not fair to charge you the full rate for these mid-range projects.  Because every small editorial project is different, please contact us to discuss specific pricing for these mid-range projects by scheduling a Discovery Call.

Why do some editors charge less than you do to edit my work?

Many editors charge a per-word price to go through your manuscript once, sometimes performing only one specific type of editing—developmental editing, continuity editing, copy editing, or proofreading.  We go through it twice, covering all four types of editing, often for less than a developmental editor’s per-word average.  In addition, we include copy editing and a final proofread to make sure your book is the best it can be.  We also format your work to go to press in two formats and include two ISBNs and three marketing graphics, at no additional charge.  Comparatively, our fees are substantially less than our colleagues when you consider the full compliment of our services.

As of 2026, the average per-word rates for various types of editing are approximately as follows (may vary by source):

• Developmental editing: $0.036 per word

• Continuity editing: $0.036 per word

• Copy editing: $0.027 per word

• Proofreading: $0.020 per word

• Formatting (fiction): $0.013 per word

Add them together—for a single round of comprehensive editing and formatting—and our per-word rate should be much higher than our established project pricing.  We support the Indie Author Community with conviction, and work hard to keep our pricing affordable.

Why do you charge more per word for manuscripts with over 75,000 words?

To clarify, we only charge a higher per-word rate for the words in excess of 75,000; that higher rate does not apply to the first 75,000 words.  This is because larger manuscripts require considerably more effort when conducting developmental and continuity editing.

Can I pay upfront in full, instead of in installments before every round?

Why, yes, thank you!  We are also happy to discuss alternate payment plans to accommodate teachers, veterans, and other authors who require special attention.  We also offer loyalty discounts for returning authors' subsequent projects.

Do you offer trial editing to see if we’re a good fit for each other?

We do! For a fee, we will edit a portion of the manuscript using the same methodology we would if you’d handed us the entire book. Within two weeks, we’ll return your sample with Tracked Changes and margin comments so you can see if our style matches yours.  ​If you hire us to complete the work on that same manuscript, we’ll subtract the trial fee from the final installment of your full editorial package.

Why do you charge for trial edits?

Because we usually perform trial edits on around 75-80 pages of your manuscript, which takes considerable time and effort.  It’s difficult to get a good sense of an editor’s style in only a few introductory pages before the story really gets going, so we like to broaden the sample to better show you how we’d handle your work.

Information Regarding Submissions, Content Exclusions, and Other Editorial Issues

All manuscripts must be submitted in MS Word for PC environments. We use Track Changes for editorial notes and suggestions. Code compliance issues may arise when crossing over from MS Word to other writing program environments (like Google Docs) or from PC to Apple or Linux environments. Pages Promotions, LLC is not responsible for the creation of crossover issues or the repair of those issues.

Services are not prorated for authors who have previously secured ISBN or Copyright registrations.

​

Authors are responsible for all Copyright and Library of Congress Registrations, including deposit copies and fees. Pages Promotions, LLC will provide instructions for the completion of these registrations.

Pages Promotions, LLC does not accept the following (if you have specific questions regarding AI generated content, please ask before submitting your manuscript):

• Erotica manuscripts 

• AI-generated manuscripts 

• AI-generated cover art and/or illustrations

Content of an excessively violent or disturbing nature may be decommissioned and returned with prorated deposit for editor’s time (billed at $50/hour) at editor’s discretion.

Pages Promotions, LLC does not provide the following services:

• board books

• pop-up books

• distribution services

• merchandise development

• ghost writing services

• research services

• marketing services

Authors who delay the projected timeline in excess of a year (from date of nonrefundable deposit’s submission), due to negligent or overly delayed return of editorial corrections, will be charged a $250  fee to insert the project back into our production calendar. In this instance, no guarantees are made to adhere to the original project timeline, as other projects may have been added to the calendar and may take precedence, depending on editor availability. In these cases, a new projected timeline will be assigned to the project.

Pages Promotions, LLC reserves the right to use author supplied or platform-generated (i.e. Ingram Spark, Amazon/KDP. Draft2Digital)  ISBNs at author's request without refunding payment.

Illustrations, images, charts, and graphs may be provided by authors but must be compliant with all copyright laws. Pages Promotions, LLC reserves the right to refuse use of content–including verbiage or images–that infringes on these laws or Pages Promotions, LLC own operating best practices.

Pages Promotions, LLC reserves the right to terminate projects with written notice and explanation, and without refunding payment or providing further service.
